The infoholic's refuge. I do really, really understand the unrealiability of statistics. And I really, really think of this page as entertainment. Really. The year in brackets represents when I added the statistics.

Feminism, some statistics

Ryan Fette

  • Equal pay: If women made the same amount of money as men, the average family income would rise by $4,000 and poverty rates would drop by half. It would also raise family incomes by $200 billion. It seems as though many people would benefit from pay equality for women. The $200 billion would have to come from somewhere, and that place is the already-bloated wallet of corporate America.
  • Rape: National Victim Center: 683,000 women are raped annually. 58 percent of rapists are sentenced to more than one year in prison. 35 percent of college men indicated in a study that they would commit a violent rape if they could get away with it. One in three American women are raped in their lifetimes.
  • Domestic violence: results in 100,000 days of hospitalization annually, almost 30,000 emergency department visits and 40,000 visits to a physician.
  • Murder: In 1994, men who killed their wives were sentenced to an average of 6.2 years, while women who killed their husbands were sentenced to an average of 17.5 years, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
