Pretoria, Where I live
(Pretoria Social Events is a Facebook group which I admin.)
Pretoria has a controversial past. It was the seat of the apartheid government for many years before the change to a democratic government in 1994.
Pretoria is still the administrative capital of South Africa and home to many of its civil servants. It is not as cosmopolitan and multi-racial as Johannesburg and lacks the nightlife and 'vibe' of Johannesburg. Although it is neater, it is more conservative. The southern side of Pretoria is the posh side and the northern side is home to the industrial areas.
Pretoria is nicknamed the Jacaranda City after the October blossoming of 70 000 jacaranda trees throughout the inner city and suburbs. Pretoria has a mild, sunny climate, no bizarre winds, no snow, and no flooding (or not terribly recently, anyway). The temperatures in winter are roughly 20°C (60°F) and in summer roughly 30°C (70°F).
One would think Pretoria's entire population of two million would be academics because there are four universities [University of Pretoria, the University of South Africa, Vista University and the Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa)] and a selection of technical colleges, a teachers training college, a technikon and various purpose-driven learning institutions. Nevertheless, the people don't walk around with their noses in the air.
The difference between Pretoria and Johannesburg can be seen by following these two links, a loud contrast, trust me, I have chosen truly illustrative links. On the day I set this up, the headline picture for the Johannesburg page was a bunch of people toyi-toyiing for the right to same-sex marriages. In Pretoria they say "what is the status quo, sir" and in Johannesburg they say "fuck the status quo".
Uber website
SAHistory.org had tons of stuff Pretoria that I never knew (I have lived here 36 years). A fanatic researcher is sitting bug-eyed, with library cards strewn about, in front of his computer. Good stuff. And would you believe - no About us area that I can go to gush.
